I was invited by MDA for the 2009 Animation Conference. There were a few speakers speech that really inspire me and gave me an intellectual thinking session.
The first one was by this guy that founded a comic production studio and they are collaborating with some Japanese studio to produce a feature animation. His topic of the day was “Bringing together an international production”.
Before the production began, there will be a couple of question to ask.
1. World Class vs First Class.
It is good to be just good enough or to be the best?
2. Entertainment isĀ an art form.
Artistic Merit vs Commercial success. Is it a choice?
3. How do consumer thinking?
What factors determine or affect purchasing decisions?
4. Taste. The magic ingredient.
5. Creating from the heart. Genuine, creativity, understanding/sympathizing the market.
(Not creating something base on an existing commercial success product.)
So what they did was finding the core members instead of having the product in mind before finding suitable people to fill the respective roles.
Step1:Finding the project. (Role of the producer)
- Identifying a producing partner.
-Selecting a product that will work for the market.
.Creatively interesting.
.Technically unique.
.Universal in theme.
-Accessible/marketable to the defined audience.
-To build a successful product, you have to build a successful team.
Step 2 : Assembling the creative team. (Role of the director)
To build a team with an international perspective.
-Director:The fatherly figure.
-Writers:the substance
-Visualizer:The skin
-Composer:The soul
It’s more than just the artistic factor in a film. It comes with abit of philosophy.
Step 3:Developing the concept.
-Coming up with the concept.
-Creating a balance between culture/medium tradition.
-Getting specific vs being”Universal”
-not being all things to all men.
